mumof4 Posted July 10, 2007 Report Posted July 10, 2007 Now for the past few days my PC has been running very slow, now i did all the usual stuff but it was still slower than a snail on tranqualisers, so i thought id delete a few programmes that i have never used in the 6 years that i have owned this piece of technological goobledygook. Must say..that the pc has really speeded up.I'd never used microsoft money so that went, showshifter..no idea what that was so that went...microsoft autoroute...hadnt used that in 4 years so that went...few other programmes went aswell that were already on the pc when i bought it.i deleted 1 and a half GB of stuff that i had never used. Some of it i didnt kow what the programmes were, and if i hadnt of used them by now, then i never would and obviously didnt need them!..I mean..what is microsoft interactive training?..that went..windows movie maker..never used it so that went..Much better now! morticiaskeeper Posted July 10, 2007 Report Posted July 10, 2007 Showshifter was a tv recorder for digital tv cards - it crashed a lot and then the company went bust. Quote

tiny Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 And once youve got rid of the crap, dont forget to defrag again! Quote
mumof4 Posted July 12, 2007 Author Report Posted July 12, 2007 I went to see if it needed defragging again, and there was only 4 red lines so i didnt bother. But every now and then..the pc is slower than if it was on dial up still. Quote

If its only the internet that is slow and you are on ADSL as opposed to Cable then try this site http://speedtester.bt.com/ Quote
mumof4 Posted July 12, 2007 Author Report Posted July 12, 2007 my result..Yet the icon in my task bar is saying that my speed is 7.6mbps! The speed test has completed on test server speedtester1.nat.bt.com for user 01********* and you have downloaded a 1.7Mb file at a speed of 27 kilo bits per second (Kbps), your service bandwidth will have been quoted to you in kilo bits per second. Your IP address is *********, your browser is reported as being Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and is running on Windows XP. BT would regard the speed ranges shown below as normal service: For 250kbps End Users speeds between 50 - 250kbps. For 500kbps End Users speeds between 100 - 500kbps. For 1000kbps End Users speeds between 200 - 1000kbps. For 2000kbps End Users speeds between 400 - 2000kbps Quote
seatkid Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 Who is your ISP? Sounds like youv'e been "throttled" for excessive useage. Alternatively it may be a setup or other problem with your modem. If you use a router, then turn it off and back on again. Quote
mumof4 Posted July 12, 2007 Author Report Posted July 12, 2007 ISP is Tiscali...I had to call them the other day as i couldnt connect and they had me delete my connection then reset it up.I am supposed to be on 8meg BB..I have tried uninstalling...reinstalling...deleteing stuff from my pc thinking i had too much cr@p on it..ive swopped the speedtouch modem for a new one...ive also swapped the filter..I can be on two forums and one may load quick whilst the other fast..or both fast or both slow.Sometimes the connection is perfect othertimes its useless, soon as it connects it disconnects.I dont download a lot of stuff if anything.I just go ont he forums and browse the net for any info i might need. But my icon keeps saying i am on 7.6mbps.I have phoned tiscali and they said there are no probs with my BB connection. After i did the connection speed i rang them and they said i was on 7.6 and that there was no problems at all and it must be my pc. seatkid Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 Try this speed test to confirm your slow internet. Check it again at 2 or 3 am. You could be on an over subscribed exchange. ISPs like Tiscali just keep adding more and more people to shared the same feed and not upgrade their capacity. Tiscali is cheap and has "unlimited" useage so attracts those bandwidth hogging p2p pigs who feck it up for everyone else. Best to search for a Tiscali forum who no doubt will have plenty to say on the subject....... If youre outside your contract period, and the problems continue, you might want to consider another ISP. katman Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 74kbps download, 317 upload! Upload speed is good so it means the line is OK but as others have said, either the bandwidth is being throttled back or or there are too many heavy users on the system. 74k is barely better than a single ISDN line !!!! :16: :( Quote
Bigjeeze Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 I think Seatkid is right - Don't forget you are on a contended service - usually up to 50-1 - all you need is some ratbag on Bitlord or similar and they hog the bandwidth from everyone. Another thing to remember is that not all of the sites you visit will have sufficient bandwidth for multiple connections - the problem with the internet is that there is no standard - So an ISP may have Gb's of bandwidth but the site you look at may only have dial up ISDN or whatever . In some countries they have no Broadband - So the site you are looking at is dependant on location and the quality of the network in between. Quote
big_kev Posted July 13, 2007 Report Posted July 13, 2007 74kbps download, 317 upload! You have a wee bit of a problem there ! Can you speak to your ADSL modem and find out what speed it is connected at ? see example below Modem ADSL Firmware VersionA2pB018e.d16fModem StatusConnectedDownStream Connection Speed1152 kbpsUpStream Connection Speed288 kbpsVPI0VCI38 If you have trouble with this....what make and model is your modem ? Quote
big_kev Posted July 14, 2007 Report Posted July 14, 2007 First thought is buy an adsl router ( netgear or whatever ) and chuck the speedtouch in the skip. Second thought is that it could be a USB problem, some other evice confilicting with your modem. Third thought is that you may need a different driver for your modem if you are on 8Meg broadband.Have you checked the support pages for your modem..... http://www.thomson-broadband.co.uk/codepag...p;ProductID=471 Quote
seatkid Posted July 15, 2007 Report Posted July 15, 2007 Ahem, the speedtouch is actually quite a good modem. I am suspicious about your figures though. 7.6Mb/s ? Do you live next door to the telephone exchange? And is that upload speed 317 b/s(slow) or 317 kb/s (too fast!) ?? Sounds like the ADSL "training" is not working..... Quote
mumof4 Posted July 15, 2007 Author Report Posted July 15, 2007 the little pc to pc icon in the task bar always shows 7.6mbps..no matter how slow it is on loading a page..I have no idea where the telephone exchange is.I used the maidenhead green triangle thingy on the speed test just now whilst typing this and the speed is upload=375kbsdownload=496 useing the recommended server in london (yellow triangle thingy) upload=383kbsdownload=307kbs Quote
mumof4 Posted July 15, 2007 Author Report Posted July 15, 2007 OK..just done a test on line....and here is my local exchange.. Coningsby at HUNTERS LANE LN44PB so umm..yes..i am practically sat on top of the exchange as according to the test my line can support 24mbps!!! i used this comparison site to see where the exchange was, http://products.xelector.com/guardian/Broadband/ Quote
seatkid Posted July 15, 2007 Report Posted July 15, 2007 Almost certainly the problem lies with your ISP Tiscali. Too many/ wrong sort of people on your exchange and/or overloaded "pipe" to your exchange. Or maybe you are being "throttled" because you exceed your quota or use p2p. Quote
mumof4 Posted July 15, 2007 Author Report Posted July 15, 2007 cant see why i would be throttled as i hardly every download anything.I downloaded some music last week, but only 5 tracks.so that is hardly exceeding a quota is it?? sometimes when i load a page, i.e...switch pages on here..i have to refresh to get the page up. seatkid Posted July 15, 2007 Report Posted July 15, 2007 Some other possibilities could be You are using the wrong MTU size. This is usually not a problem if you are running Windows XP unless you messed with them e.g. with Registry Mechanic.Use Notepad and cut and paste the lines below between **** and ***** into a new text file called "TiscaliMtu.reg" and save your to desktop. Double click on the file to set your MTU to 1500 (default for XP and optimum for Tiscali) ****Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters]"MTU"=dword:000005dc **** (You need to restart your computer to adopt the new setting) ---or --- You machine has been compromised and is now a "bot". i.e. Running a virus/trojan which is using your internet connection for someone else's (usually malicous) benefit. Download and install Spybot search and destroy. This is pretty good at picking up bots. Remember to update the software with the latest definitions. If you press Ctrl-Alt-Del to launch Task Manager, under the process tab you will see all (except rootkits!) processes running on your computer. For the trained eye its usually pretty easy to see if your infected.....Under the networking tab you will be able to see any internet activity on a graph. This should be zero if your'e not loading any pages, if its not it could indicate a "bot" Quote
mumof4 Posted July 15, 2007 Author Report Posted July 15, 2007 Just installed spybot and will run it in a mo..here are two screen shots of the processes...i have noooooooooooo idea what the majority of them are! Quote
